BEHAVIOR AND WELFARE |
We have animal welfare as a maximum priority in all our procedures. This means that our multidisciplinary team works to optimize the quality of life of each animal maintained here considering all the spheres of the five areas: proper nutrition, appropriate environment, physical health, behavioral health, as well as positive states for the mental health of the animals. Considering the importance of welfare in the essence of its actions, Parque das Aves seeks to work with the concept of One Welfare, which consists in not only providing a good quality of life for the animals that live here, but also for our employees, the public that visits us, and an extreme care and respect for the environment that surrounds us: the Atlantic Rainforest.
In aspects of animal welfare, we have a team dedicated exclusively to providing items of species-specific environmental enrichment that aim to meet the individual behavioral demand of the animals that live here. These professionals are also trained to perform behavioral monitoring using well-known standards of sampling and etiological record that vary according to the purpose of each research to be carried out. We have an expertise in analyzing behavioral data, presenting graphs of behavioral-related frequencies, by temporal distribution, among others, as well as statistical analyses with non-parametric tests that allow a non-subjective interpretation as to behavioral aspects. We also have experience with operant conditioning techniques with positive reinforcement that allows us to offer a higher degree of comfort to our animals through training sessions, providing a greater habituation whether through daily procedures or those of preventive clinical routine. Our area of expertise also includes aspects of classical conditioning, which provides support in pre-release training in order to increase foraging rate and anti-predator skills, for example.
