THE IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT
Environmental enrichment includes activities that provide a high level of physical and psychological well-being for the animals at Parque das Aves. Our institution has always been concerned with the quality of life of the animals under its care. We know that a bird maintains a positive state of well-being when it is well-nourished, healthy (physically and mentally), and sheltered in a suitable and comfortable environment where it is free to express its natural behavior of the species. Through environmental enrichment techniques, it is possible to provide an environment where the animals remain healthy, entertained, and happy when under human care.

O enriquecimento ambiental inclui atividades que proporcionam um alto grau de bem-estar físico e psicológico aos animais do Parque das Aves. Nossa instituição sempre se preocupou com a qualidade de vida dos animais sob seus cuidados. Sabemos que uma ave mantém um estado de bem-estar positivo se estiver bem-nutrida, saudável (física e mentalmente) e abrigada em um ambiente adequado e confortável, onde esteja livre para expressar os comportamentos naturais da espécie. Por meio das técnicas de enriquecimento ambiental, é possível oferecer um ambiente onde os animais se mantenham sadios, entretidos e felizes quando estão sob cuidados humanos.
There are 5 types of environmental enrichment that can be provided for the animals:
- Food: providing the opportunity for the animals to look for food that is hidden or that are offered in ways different than usual, or on days and times that are unpredictable.
- Sensory: providing resources and situations that arouse all five of the animal’s senses (flavors to stimulate the sense of smell, new flavors that are felt by taste, textures that allow use the sense of touch, new colors on the grounds that work with the vision, and new sounds to sharpen hearing).
- Physical: offering objects that simulate the animal’s natural habitat (trees, trunks, lakes, sand, dirt, rocks, etc.).
- Cognitive: stimulating the animal’s intellectual capacity with challenges.
- Social: enabling a safe interaction of the animal with other animals of the same or other species to provide various stimuli similar to those that the animal encounters in its natural environment.
The environmental enrichment activities occur daily at Parque das Aves. They are also done in festive dates, including themed items such as pumpkins for Halloween, eggs at Easter, and gift packages at Christmas time). All items brought into the animals’ environment are safe, allowing for a healthy interaction.
